| See Every Log, Control Every Step with LogScan |
In today’s forestry industry, data is no longer just a record-keeping tool. It plays a central role in understanding where logs are, how much timber is available, and how efficiently operations are performing across the value chain. Accurate, reliable data supports better planning, clearer accountability, and more informed operational decisions, regardless of the size of the operation.
|
| DataNate supports forestry operators through two complementary solution streams. LogScan is a modular, plantation-based scanning system, while Sawmill Development Solutions deliver custom-built systems for mill optimisation. Together, these technologies provide visibility from the forest floor through to final dispatch in a way that is practical, scalable, and accessible. |
 |
Addressing Visibility at the Source
One of the most persistent challenges in forestry operations is uncertainty at the very beginning of the value chain. Discrepancies between expected yields and actual volumes, limited visibility at plantations, and early-stage losses often compound as timber moves through depots, transport routes, and mills.
LogScan addresses this challenge by focusing on log verification at source. Using laser scanning and intelligent software, plantation-based LogScan modules establish a trusted data baseline from the outset. This early visibility allows operators to identify losses sooner, improve reconciliation accuracy, and plan with greater confidence.
Crucially, this level of control is no longer limited to large organisations. LogScan’s modular structure allows forestry businesses of all sizes to implement scanning and tracking where it makes the biggest difference, without the need for large upfront system changes.
|
| Modular Control Across Operations
LogScan modules can be implemented individually or combined over time to build broader operational visibility. This approach allows smaller operators to start with a single focus area, while larger operations can expand across the value chain as needed.
Modules support plantation scanning, depot control, transport visibility, mill delivery confirmation, mill intake tracking, and stock take management. With each module available on a monthly basis, companies can invest progressively and focus on operational pain points rather than committing to a single, complex system.
Beyond Scanning: Sawmill Development Solutions
While LogScan provides a strong foundation for visibility and control, some mills require deeper, site-specific optimisation. DataNate’s Sawmill Development Solutions are custom-developed to suit individual mill environments and production goals.
Custom development can include destacking systems, kiln management, recovery optimisation, dry mill and wet mill management, dispatch flow control, digital planned maintenance systems, cloud-linked stock scanning, and digital data capturing for HR and production teams. |
|
Proven in Practice
Operators using DataNate’s solutions describe a clear shift from fragmented information and delayed reporting to immediate access to reliable data.
“Having all our production and stock data available in one place has changed how we operate. Information is easy to access, professionally presented, and simple to share with clients. It’s improved how we plan and how confidently we engage with our customers.” — Johan Spies - ELS Timber Products
“As White River Sawmills, we made a strategic decision to move forward in the digital space and committed to implementing key projects to modernise our operations. These included a digital planned maintenance system for proactive downtime management, cloud-linked stock scanning for improved accuracy and real-time visibility, and digital data capturing solutions for HR and production teams to improve workflow management. DataNate is the partner capable of bringing these projects to life. Their experience within the timber industry, combined with strong technical expertise and professionalism, has added significant value to our digital journey. We highly recommend DataNate to any organisation looking to implement practical, industry-informed digital solutions that improve accuracy, visibility, and operational efficiency.” — Willie Stander - White River Sawmills |
| |
| | “Before, information was spread across different systems and people. Now everything is in one place, organised and accurate. The data is reliable because it’s backed by proof, which gives us confidence in our numbers. What stands out for us is trust. We like doing business with people who have strong values. My faith is important to me, and I can see that the team shares those principles. The biggest change is speed. We’ve moved from saying ‘I’ll get back to you tomorrow’ to giving answers immediately.” — Ignis Steenkamp - Warburton Sawmill |
|
Building Control Step by Step
By starting with modular, plantation-based scanning or implementing tailored mill solutions where required, forestry businesses of all sizes can build control step by step, strengthening operational confidence and modernising operations without disrupting existing systems. DataNate is not just a service provider but a partner capable of bringing these projects to life. |
